Indy Star Does Flash Fiction Article Just In Time For the 500

I want to thank Abe at the Indy Star for interviewing me and running a story on the current flash fiction movement in international circles.

Though I wish he would have included a few more sentences outlining my positive take on flash fiction and prose poetry than he did, I still think it's great to see large newspapers picking up on this exciting genre.

"Will You Verb with Me?" Foxtrot Kicks off Snowvigate/Arion "Build a Poem--Build a House" Project a Week Early

Mel Blumenthal, a professional ballroom dancer from Arizona, led 30 Creative Writing students, faulty, staff, and guests through an hour of foxtrotting to Nat King Cole in Italian and lectures on syntax and rhythm today in Root Hall on the campus of Indiana State University, kicking off the Snowvigate/Arion "Build a Poem--Build a House" Project to raise money for Habitat for Humanity a week early.

After the performance, Arion--the ISU Student Creative Writing Association--hosted a bake sale to collect money for their annual publication, the Tonic. Eaters also wrote original lines of poetry and prose on an 8 ft. piece of wood to be used to build the Habitat house, with all donations from the signing going directly to the poem-house building project.

Later in the day, Ashley Hood, Lowell Torres--President of Arion--and Jessica Dyer--Vice President of Arion and an editor at Snowvigate--appeared on ISU TV to discuss the Tonic, Snowvigate, keeping warm during snow, and the donations to Habitat for Humanity.

Build a Poem--Build a House Project

Snowvigate journal, Arion, and the Indiana State University Creative Writing Committee have joined forces with Habitat for Humanity, the ISU Center for Public Service and Community Engagement, and writers around the world for its "Build a Poem--Build a House" Project. This event will begin before Eamonn Wall's reading on Wed. February 15 at 4:00 pm in the Cunningham Memorial Library's first floor reading space.

An 8 ft. piece of wood will be on display in the English Department's Root Hall Student Lounge starting Feb.16th for those who would like to write three lines of original poetry or prose on the board. Each writer is being asked to donate a minimum of $1.00 for their composition. This money and the piece of wood will go toward building a house for a homeless Terre Haute female and her three children.

Writers from Ireland, South Africa, Denmark, Australia, and the United States contributing work to Snowvigate and the "Build a Poem--Build a House" Project are Eamonn Wall, Kim Chinquee, Brian Evenson, Gary Lutz, Cooper Esteban, J.L. Jacobs, Girija Tropp, Daphne Buter, Brian Beatty, Claudia Smith, Jill Hoffman, Brian Ownbey, Liesl Jobson, Tom Dvorske, Arisa White, Anne Panning, and many others.

If you would like to help build a REAL house of words, see Mary Ann Duncan in Room A-264, Root Hall, or email Doug Martin at dmartin21@isugw.indstate.edu. A special thank you goes out to Leslia for helping brainstorm this event.
